Assignment in Thailand

A good example for a growing development in the educational field

In 1999 there was a request from a big vocational college in the north of Thailand. The Chiangmai College of Technology asked for assistance to improve the practical training in the field of power electronics. Senior Expert Professor D. Dahlinger, retired professor from University of Wiesbaden, analyzed

the present situation and started training for the lectures of the Electronic Department.
The main problem was the lack of sufficient training equipment. In a second assignment teachers and engineers of the college constructed several training units (together with the expert), which can be used for a huge range of experiments in this field. This modular models include all kind of power-electronic-circuits and is also standard equipment at the University of Wiesbaden.

Under Professor Dahlinger's advise the teachers were able to develop a new practical training script. In the following years teachers and students built more and more training units as part of their examination, following the same scheme. Due to the great success of these assignments, the director of the college, who has liked to implement important parts of the German vocational training system, requested for further help.

On Professor Dahlinger's initiative an academic cooperation with University of Wiesbaden has been developed. Two degree programs are been developed by the project leader Prof. Dr. Erb, an active faculty member of the University of Wiesbaden. The two Bachelor Degree programs in Electrical Engineering and in Engineering & Business Administration has been developed.
During the last two years several experts for Digital techniques, Electronics, Physics and Mathematics have come to train the teachers who will run the degree courses soon, and have prepared the teaching curriculum and scripts, following the German pattern.

Many of the more than 4,000 students of the college are from very poor and underprivileged families. With this assignments a lot of help reach this students to improve their skills and enable them to fulfill the future requirements of the local industries and business houses.

  Assignment on the Philippines

This catamaran was an essential piece of equipment for an unusual assignment on the Philippine island of Negros. On behalf of the urban authorities of Sagay City, Senior Expert Wilfried Bohlmann was asked to draw up the preliminary plans for a harbour capable of taking ocean-going vessels. The economic conditions prevailing there made it necessary to renew the infrastructure. The sugar cane industry was no longer competitive and the standard of living had declined. Changing over to vegetable and fruit production was only worthwhile if the harvested
products could also be exported, which meant building a harbour for ocean-going vessels. Apart from this, the Senior Expert was asked to plan a shallow fishing port. The project meant exploring the marine floor and checking future foundations for the sheet-pile bulkheads. Energy was to come from geothermals from the volcanic substratum.

  Assignment in Iran
The conclusion drawn from Ruth Soleimani-G?tz' six-week-assignment at the Mashad Leather Co. in Teheran was: "Very good cooperation in all areas" was the conclusion drawn from Ruth Soleimani-G?tz' six-week assignment at the Mashad Leather Co. in Teheran. The production line for ladies' and men's outerwear made of nappa leather and suede was completely new, but manufacturing trials, which started a year ago, encountered problems with the quality and productivity of the garments. The Senior Expert began training the 50 employees, placing the
emphasis on the early identification of faults and on effective quality control. She evolved a new system for the production procedure and introduced intensive further training. Since the machines were new and the staff very open to innovation, the plant has already given notice of its next assignment enquiry for Ms. Soleimani-G?tz, saying "it was a valuable experience."

  Assignment in China
A hood for the State limousine

This is how to do it! The hood fits perfectly and, above all, is absolutely watertight. Senior Expert Gerhard Werner gives the plant engineers some practical instruction.
It is not so long ago that the Chinese Hongqi, which bore the name "Jie Fang" (= "Red Flag"), always had the right of way. In former times, the black stretch limousine, which weighed several tons, used to transport the leaders of the People's Republic behind curtained windows along a special lane in the middle of the road. Nowadays, the Chinese market is looking for very different models.

Senior Expert Gerhard Werner, an experienced car body design engineer, flew to Changchun in the north-east of China and, at the Hongqi plant, drew up his recommendations for a folding hood. The Chinese engineers were instructed step by step on the manufacturing process, starting with the front closure on the windscreen, then the new window guides and lifting mechanisms, and finally the necessary bracings. Gerhard Werner documented all the work in a report that will serve as a set of basic working instructions in the future.
