Assignment
in Kenya
Cooking with the sun means making
use of the unlimited supply of energy from the universe.
That was the task for Senior Expert, Horst Barnerssoi.
His travels took him to Northern Kenya were, in the
Catholic Technical Training Centre in Maralal, preparations
were being made for the production of solar cookers.
Barnerssoi ensured that the plans provided only for
local materials to be used - from the templates to the
long handles for the cooking pot. These handles are
particularly important, firstly because the pots have
to be held in the middle of the solar dish where the
heat is at its |
|
|
| |
strongest, and secondly
the "ugali" has to be stirred very intensively during
cooking, otherwise the viscous maize will stick to the
pot. Free, easily tapped energy is of particular importance
in Kenya. Over-exploitation of the forests over the past
decades has led to increasing degeneration into steppe
and soil erosion.

Searching for gold in Tanzania
For four weeks, Senior Expert Dr. Reinhard Ramdohr examined
possible sites for mining ore. The main goal of the newly
established mining company was to find gold. Dr. Ramdohr
visited all the prospecting shafts that had been sunk
to a depth of 10 meters in an area 200 kilometers around
Tabora and examined them closely to assess the |
|
| |
potential of the mines. The first few turned out to be
failures, but he was soon able to recommend a number of
more promising drillings. Success was not long in coming,
with the discovery of several veins of gold. Ramdohr was
able to give the mining company all sorts of useful hints
and many practical tips. The client was grateful because,
as Ramdohr reported, the mine operators were "highly enthusiastic
and exceedingly hard working", but had neither the knowledge
nor the experience of a geologist. |
