"Continuation and Disruption of a Karen Religious Movement in Burma: The Myitta Byamasoe" '

A talk by Kwanchewan Buadaeng, Ph.D.

The paper describes the case of the Myitta Byamasoe religious movement among the Karen peoples in Burma. The movement started in 1866 and has continued until the present day. Important components of the movement namely the organizational structure and the practices are discussed. The speculation in the prophet, certain ritual techniques and monuments construction are important practices which maintain the movement. However, it shows that internal tensions could happen and an adjustment is needed in order to better unite and expand the movement members and to counter or compete with other dominant groups.

Dr. Kwanchewan Buadaeng is a researcher at the Social Research Institute, Chiang Mai University. She got her Ph.D. in anthropology from University of Sydney, Australia. One of her current research projects is on the religious movements among the Karen in Thailand and Burma
