250th Meeting - Tuesday, July 6th 2004

"The Impact of Air Quality on Chiang Mai residents."

A talk and presentation by Dr. Duongchan Apaavaatjrut Charoenmuang

Present: An audience of 26.

The introduction to Dr. Duongchan's talk:

Chiang Mai air quality is worse than you may have thought. The critical period is in the dry season. At this time the air contains an increased amount of fine particulate matter (PM10), much more than the allowable amount. Statistics show that there is a significant increase in the number of people suffering from respiratory problem. More people (non smoker) die of lung cancer in Chiang Mai. There is a need to identify the causes of pollution, and take steps to initiate remedial action. We are campaigning for better air quality for a better quality of life in Chiang Mai. As a woman on a mission, Dr. Duongchan pulled no punches in describing in detail the affects of air pollution on Chiang Mai residents, and in laying the blame at the doors of those residents most responsible for this insidious phenomenon.
